Lost Draw Cellars Tempranillo - An Assay

Tempranillo From Deep In The Heart of Texas

Where It's From

The Lost Draw Tempranillo hails from the mouthful of an AVA called Fredericksburg In The Texas Hill Country. This AVA is centered around the small town of Fredericksburg located in central Texas just west of Austin and north of San Antonio. Interestingly enough, it is hard to find wines made under this sub-AVA. Most will choose to fall under either the broader AVA of Texas Hill Country or the county where the grapes were grown.

This area of Texas experiences a humid subtropical climate with warm to hot summers and milder winters making it a great location to grow Tempranillo.

Varietal Composition

The 2019 Lost Draw Cellars Tempranillo from Fredericksburg In The Texas Hill Country is 100% Tempranillo grown and produced in Texas. 85% hails from the Wildseed Vineyard with the remaining balance of 15% coming from Parr Vineyard.

In The Glass

This wine exemplifies Tempranillo from Texas. The color is a bright, youthful red and the aromas jump out of the glass; cherries and strawberries with subtle hints of baking spice. Tannins are firm but not overpowering and the acidity is what I would consider high by itself but makes it perfect with food. The finish is a little short, leaving you wanting more but, given the choice between a short finish of an elegant wine or a lingering finish of a clumsy overly alcoholic wine, I'll take the short finish all day.

In terms of pairing, I would not hesitate to match this guy up with some grilled venison topped with a mushroom cream sauce. The gaminess from the meat will play well with the aromas and flavors of this wine.

Producer's Information

Lost Draw Cellars produced their first vintage in 2012, however, they were grape growers for almost a decade prior to their inaugural vintage. Their winery in Fredericksburg opened its doors in 2014 and is now one of the more popular wineries to visit on the Texas wine trail.

Lost Draw Cellars is Texas through and through and as such, they focus on producing wines made with 100% Texas grown fruit.
