Opening A Bottle Of Wine - A Guide

Updated: Dec 12, 2021

It's Easier Than You Might Think!

There are a myriad of ways to open a bottle of wine from slamming it against the wall with a shoe to pressurizing the inside and popping the cork out. But by and away the most simple way to open a bottle of wine is with the waiters corkscrew. Do yourself a favor and go buy one of these for a few bucks from your local wine store and keep it in a kitchen drawer. These really are life savers when it comes to wine.

This is a simple machine that uses leverage to pull a cork out of a bottle. There are three main parts to the waiters corkscrew; the foil cutter or what you would call a blade or knife, the worm or screw, and the lever. My recommendation is to find what is referred to as a “double lever,” it looks more complicated but trust me on this one, it’ll make your job way easier.

How To

The first step in opening a bottle of wine is to remove the foil. Most, but not all, bottles of wine will have a colored piece of foil around the top. Originally this was to hide the ullage or fill level of a bottle of wine back when bottles were filled by hand. With modern technology, there is now very little variation. Open the foil cutter and place the serrated edge against the bottom rim on the bottle. With you other hand, twist the bottle 180 degrees in one direction and then 180 degrees in the other. Now that the foil has been cut, you can use the blade to lift off the foil revealing the cork below.

Now that you can see the cork, pull the worm away from the body of the wine opener and position the tip of the screw on the center of the cork. From here, begin to twist the opener into the cork until almost all of the worm is inside. Now place the first ledge of the lever onto the lip of the bottle and slowly apply pressure pushing upwards on the handle of the opener. As the cork slowly emerges from the bottle, you will need to reposition the lever to the next ledge, giving you more leverage.

Take care not to “pop” the cork out of the bottle, very often there will be some wine on the bottom of the cork and this can easily get on your shirt. Instead, use your hand to work the cork out the last few millimeters. It may be necessary to wipe the opening with a towel to remove any sediment that has accumulated in the bottle.

And that’s it. Now you know how to open a bottle of wine.
